Before a prospect accepts your connection request or replies to your message, they click your name and look at your profile. In a few seconds, they decide whether you look credible and worth a response.
A strong LinkedIn profile has six parts that do this work: your profile photo, banner, headline, summary, experience, and skills. If any of them is weak or missing, it gives people a reason to ignore you, no matter how good your message is.
This checklist walks through all six, explains what “good” looks like for outreach, and shows you how to check your own profile in seconds with a free LinkedIn Profile Score.
Most LinkedIn profile advice is written for job seekers. It focuses on getting noticed by recruiters. Outreach works differently.
When you send a connection request, you are asking a stranger to trust you. The first thing they do is check your profile to answer three quick questions:
Who is this person?
Are they credible?
Is there a reason for me to respond?
Your message gets you the click. Your profile gets you the “yes.” A personalized message paired with a blank banner, a vague headline, and an empty About section still looks like spam. A clear, complete profile makes the same message look like it came from someone worth talking to.
That is why your profile is part of your outreach campaign, not separate from it.
A good LinkedIn profile tells the right people, in seconds, who you help and why they should trust you. For outreach, that means four things:
Each section of your profile contributes to one or more of these. Here is how to check them one by one.

1. Profile photo
What works best: a clear, recent photo of your face, well lit, with a simple background. You look approachable and professional.
Quick check: would a prospect recognize you on a video call from this photo?Common mistakes: no photo at all, a logo instead of a face, group photos, cropped party pictures, or a blurry, low-resolution image.
Why it matters for outreach: requests from profiles without a real photo are easy to dismiss as fake or automated.
2. Banner image
What works best: a custom banner (1584 x 396 px) that reinforces who you help or what you do. It can be simple: a short line about your offer, your company branding, or a clean visual tied to your work.
Quick check: are you still using LinkedIn’s default background?
Common mistakes: the default blue banner, text that gets cut off on mobile, or busy images that distract from your photo.
Why it matters for outreach: the banner is the largest visual on your profile. It is free space to show prospects what you do before they read a single word.
3. Headline
What works best: a headline that says who you help and how, not just your job title. For example, “Helping B2B SaaS teams book more demos through LinkedIn” says more than “Sales Manager at Company X.”
Quick check: if a prospect only read your headline, would they know why you are reaching out?
Common mistakes: job title only, a long list of buzzwords, or a headline written for recruiters when you are selling.
Why it matters for outreach: your headline appears next to your name in invitations, search results, and messages. It is often the only thing a prospect reads before deciding.
What works best: a short, scannable About section that opens with who you help, explains the problem you solve, shows proof, and ends with a clear next step.
Quick check: do the first two lines (the part shown before “see more”) give a reason to keep reading?
Common mistakes: an empty About section, a long autobiography, or writing entirely about yourself instead of the reader.
Why it matters for outreach: prospects who are curious enough to read your summary are close to responding. This is where you turn interest into trust.
5. Experience
What works best: current and recent roles with short descriptions that show results, not just duties. Numbers, outcomes, and the type of clients you worked with all help.
Quick check: does your current role explain what you do for customers, or is it blank?
Common mistakes: job titles with no descriptions, outdated roles, or copy-pasted job descriptions full of internal jargon.
Why it matters for outreach: experience is where prospects check whether you are legit. Real results make your claims in the message believable.
6. Skills
What works best: skills that match what your buyers care about and search for, with your most relevant ones at the top.
Quick check: would your ideal prospect recognize your top skills as useful to them?
Common mistakes: random or outdated skills, very generic ones only, or none at all.
Why it matters for outreach: skills support your headline and experience. They help you show up in searches and confirm that you know your space.
Going through this checklist by hand works, but it is hard to judge your own profile objectively. That is what the free LinkedIn Profile Score is for.
Paste your LinkedIn profile URL and you get an instant score out of 100, broken down across the same six sections in this checklist. Each section shows whether it is strong, needs work, or is critical, with feedback on what is working and what to change.
Your two Priority sections are called out first, so you know exactly where to start.
It is free, instant, and private. There is no sign-up, and the tool only reads your public profile. It never posts, messages, or changes anything.

Once you know your weak sections, you can fix them by hand using the checklist above, or let the Profile Optimizer do it for you. For a deeper walkthrough, see our guide to optimizing your LinkedIn profile.
Select Boost my profile score and the Profile Optimizer starts with your Priority sections. It uses AI to rewrite your headline, summary, and experience, enhances your profile photo, and generates a new banner image. You see the new version side by side with your current profile.
Nothing changes on LinkedIn until you approve it. You can accept a suggestion, edit it, generate a new one, or skip a section. A full run takes about 10 to 20 minutes and uses We-Connect credits, which come with both trial and paid accounts.
Use this short version before your next outreach campaign:
☐ Profile photo: clear, recent, face visible, simple background
☐ Banner: custom image, not the default, nothing cut off on mobile
☐ Headline: says who you help and how, not just your job title
☐ Summary: first two lines hook the reader, ends with a next step
☐ Experience: current role filled in, results over duties
☐ Skills: relevant to your buyers, most important ones on top
What makes a good LinkedIn profile?
A good LinkedIn profile clearly shows who you help and why they should trust you. For outreach, that means a real photo, a custom banner, a value-focused headline, a short About section, results in your experience, and skills your buyers care about.
How do I know if my LinkedIn profile is strong?
Check each of the six sections against the checklist above, or paste your profile URL into the free LinkedIn Profile Score. It scores your profile out of 100 and shows which sections need work first.
How often should I audit my LinkedIn profile?
Review it before you start a new outreach campaign, and any time your role, offer, or target audience changes. Your profile should always match the people you are reaching out to.
Can ChatGPT analyze my LinkedIn profile?
ChatGPT can give general feedback on text you paste into it, but it won’t score your profile consistently or judge it specifically for outreach. A dedicated tool like the LinkedIn Profile Score checks all six sections the same way every time and shows you where to start.
Is the LinkedIn Profile Score free?
Yes. Checking your score is free, with no sign-up needed. You only use credits if you choose to run the Profile Optimizer to rewrite and update your profile.
Every connection request and message you send leads back to your profile. Prospects use it to decide whether you are worth a reply, often in just a few seconds.
When your photo, banner, headline, summary, experience, and skills work together, your outreach looks credible from the first click. When one of them is weak, even a great message can get ignored.
Use this checklist to review each section, then check your free LinkedIn Profile Score to see where you stand. Start with your two Priority sections, and fix them by hand or in a few minutes with the Profile Optimizer.
